Hello again Alison
The crew list records that Jeremiah Lanning signed on SS Induna as Ship's Cook on 26 February 1942 in Greenock. He later took the position of Steward. He was one of half a dozen or so late changes to the crew list. The crew knew their destination was the Arctic (my uncle told my dad - wartime secrecy meant he shouldn't have)and a handful took the opportunity to try to find safer destinations (Merchant Navy crew in WWII were allowed to turn down 2 postings and the third was compulsory). The survivors from SS Induna spent 4 days in open lifeboats in the Arctic. I read one account which stated that the Steward used his own body to shelter one of the Steward's Boys, who was one of very few who survived the sinking and kept all his limbs. The survivors were in hospital in Murmansk for many weeks and were visited by crew of the Naval escort ships stationed up there. One of those veterans mentioned Jeremiah in a letter to me many years ago. He obviously left an impression on those he met.
Regards
Alan

Hello Alison
I know the name very well! Jeremiah was the Steward if I remember correctly. I did a lot of research about 15 years ago and every once in a while search the internet for new questions about Induna. Do you know how we can swap e-mail adresses privately?
Best wishes
Alan

Dear AlanB
My grandfather's name was Jeremiah Lanning. I'm sure my family would be interested in any other information you have.
Thanks,
Alison

My Uncle was aboard Induna when she as torpedoed and went down with the ship. Am curious to know who your grandfather was. I have the crew list and some other documents you might find of interest.
Best Wishes

My grandfather served on the SS Induna and survived in one of the lifeboats. He unfortunately lost the lower part of both of his legs but lived on for many years. My mother and aunt would both like a copy of this show on dvd. Any idea when this will be available?
