This exclusive documentary charts the story of how the British people braced themselves for invasion.
June, 1940. It was a perilous time for the United Kingdom. With Poland, Holland and Belgium annexed by the relentless Nazis, and Norway and France teetering on the brink, every household in Britain received a leaflet from the Ministry of Information.
If The Invader Comes was a detailed list of instructions from the Government to the people – what to do if the Germans invaded, how to react if they parachuted into your garden and what to do if they ever knocked on your door.
With much of Western Europe in German hands, the prospect of an invasion of the British mainland was very real. When Churchill promised to fight on the beaches, on the streets and in the hills, he wasn't joking.
With the threat of attack hanging in the air, the British people were decanting their petrol tanks, removing their road signs and honing their garden tools just in case. If the Germans were coming, they were going to be ready for them.
Revealing the lengths some people went to to defend themselves and their country, The Germans Are Coming tells the sometimes quirky and humorous tales that existed in a desperate time.

As an eight year old when the war started in 1939 I well remember the precautions taken to confront the Germans should they arrive. The farmers fields around our village all had metal stakes driven into the ground to stop gliders from landing. My Father was in the Home Guard and ready to fight with whatever he could lay his hands on.
I can never remember adults in our village showing any fear of what may lay ahead of them. - Something to say? Add a comment...
