In Living Memory
New to UKTV History, and part of its Remembrance Sunday programming, In Living Memory honours those who have lost their lives in war since 1945.
The Armed Forces Memorial in Staffordshire is the first national monument commemorating lives lost in military service since the end of World War II. Created seven years ago, it was decided that the memorial should be built outside London, and the National Memorial Arboretum was the realisation of this long process.
To compile the list of 16,000 names that appear on the monument, a research team sifted though the personal records of almost six million servicemen and women. The final list is designed to reflect the many ways in which Britain’s brave soldiers have lost their lives during the past 60 years – commemorating those killed in major conflicts but also the victims of accidents and personnel who died while carrying out peacekeeping or humanitarian operations.
In Living Memory takes a look at how the monument was constructed and examines what it means to the relatives of the fallen.
It also tell the stories of some of the soldiers that have been remembered – like the young serviceman killed during a terrorist attack in Northern Ireland and a private killed on watch duty in Korea.
