On the 8th January 1940, food rationing was introduced. It made big headlines - but only 3 food items were initially introduced: bacon, sugar and butter.
I was only 10 years in october 1939,saw so much of the war years that I could write a book.My mother already had two of us children,so when my sister was born April 1940,myself being the eldest took on the running of the house including shopping with all the ration book problems. To queue in say Sainsbury's meant about 6 different counters to queue up at for different items. It used to take ages just to buy say butter, eggs (if in),sugar(or jam),bacon, etc etc. Meat was sold in another shop, vegetables from stools by oadside if available, queues so long not always certain you would be successful to reach the front and be served before goods ran out. much much more if required, Paul Motuel( then of Rosehill, the market,Carshalton,Surrey
