Vietnam Ceasefire
On 15th January 1973 US President Nixon announced a ceasefire in Vietnam, bringing to a halt American bombing and ending US involvement in the war. The announcement followed peace talks between the US and the representatives from North and South Vietnam and agreement on the terms for peace - the eventual reunificiation of Vietnam and the release of all American prisoners of war within two months providing all American troops had been withdrawn.
American involvement in the war had started nearly 20 years earlier – in February 1955. Over 5 million people are thought to have died during the conflict. In this photo, which dates from 1967, a member of the public seeks refuge in an air-raid shelter in Hanoi, while American bombers raid the city.
