Gandhi is Assassinated
'Mahatma' Gandhi, the father of India, was assassinated on January 30th, 1948 – shot at point blank range by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse. Blaming Gandhi for sacrificing Hindu interests by agreeing to the partition of India, Godse had tried to assassinate Gandhi several times before approaching him when he was on his way to evening prayer and shooting him three times.

Millions of Indians took to the streets to mourn Gandhi, plus anti-Brahmin riots soon broke out across the country, as Godse was Brahmin. Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were sentenced to death for the murder.
