The Battle of Hastings
On 14th October, 1066, Norman troops, led by Duke William of Normandy, defeated the English army in the Battle of Hastings. His decisive victory led to the Norman conquest of England – just two months later he was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey on 25th December 1066.
The battle, which took place at Senlac Hill just north of Hastings in East Sussex, saw around 8,000 troops killed, including King Harold II of England. In this image, which shows a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry, Harold is hit by an arrow in his eye.
