Prague is Invaded
Russian tanks rolled into Prague on August 20th 1968 as the Soviets seized power in Czechoslovakia and crushed the political and economic reforms known as the Prague Spring. The reforms, which were led by the country's new prime minister, Alexander Dubcek, included the lifting of censorship and guaranteed freedom in the media.
More than 200,000 Warsaw Pact soldiers poured into Czechoslovakia that day, with another 400,000 arriving by the end of the week. Dubcek was taken to Moscow for talks and soon signed an agreement renouncing the reforms. It wasn't until 1991 that the last Russian troops finally left Czechoslovakia.
