Hiroshima
On 6th August 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, killing around 140,000 people and injuring thousands more. In this photo, you can see the twisted wreckage of a theatre, located 800 metres from the epicentre of the atomic explosion.
Three days later the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaka, killing a further 74,000 people. The two atomic bombs – to date the only nuclear weapons used in a war – resulted in Japan's surrender, announced on August 15, which officially brought to an end World War Two.
