First Test Tube Baby
The world's first test tube baby was born on 25th July 1978. Louise Brown was delivered by caesarean section at Oldham and District General Hospital, weighing 5lb 12oz (2.61 kg). Her parents, Lesley and John Brown, had tried for nine years to have a child naturally but were unsuccessul, so an embryo (of Lesley's egg and John's sperm) was implanted into Lesley's womb after it had been fertilised in a lab.
Millions of babies have now been born using in-vitro fertilisation, including Louise's younger sister Natalie. In this photo with her parents, Louise is 15 months old. Louise now has a son, who was conceived naturally.
