Man on the Moon
'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.' These were Neil Armstrong's momentous words as he stepped down onto the moon's surface on the 20th July 1969 and became the first person to set foot on the moon. His moonwalk finally ended the long wait since John F Kennedy's 1961 speech promised to put a man on the moon. It also brought to a close the so-called 'Space Race' between the USA and Russia which had started in October 1957, after the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union.
The three-man crew of Apollo 11 included Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin (shown in this photo standing on the moon), Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Commander Neil Armstrong. All three had been on one mission before Apollo 11. The moon landing was watched live on television by over 500 million viewers.
