Franz Ferdinand Assassination
Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on 28th June 1914 – an event that triggered the beginning of World War I. Ferdinand, who is seen here with his wife Sophie riding in an open carriage just before their assassination, was shot in Sarajevo by Bosnian Serb Gravilo Princip.
The couple had narrowly escaped death earlier in the day when a grenade was thrown at their car. It was whilst travelling to visit those injured in the attack at hospital that their driver took a wrong turn down a side street and the royal couple were spotted by Princip. The Austro-Hungarian response against Serbia led to a chain reaction of war declarations. Within a month, Europe was at war.
