The End of War in Europe
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that World War 2 had officially ended in Europe on 8th May 1945 – a day that saw huge crowds take to the streets to celebrate. In this original Picture Post photo, ecstatic Londoners are having a great time on VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).
VE Day was the day that the Allied forces officially accepted Germany's surrender, which had been authorised after Hitler's suicide by German President Karl Donitz. More than 60 years on, World War Two is still classed as the most widespread and deadliest war in history, causing more than 60 million casualties.
