"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender." This was Sir Winston's first speech to the House of Commons on 4 June 1940. It was given shortly after he took over as Prime Minister, in the first year of World War II.
