Spies in the Sky

An extraordinary documentary about intelligence collection from the air and quite surprising that the RAF overflew the Soviet Union on behalf of the US in its RB-45s where this was banned officially. Curtis LeMay carried on in a most dangerous and irresponsible way out of Thule.

I was especially gratified to see the coverage at the end of the search of the site where the C-130 60528 crashed on 02.09.1958 in Soviet Armenia. It was 40 years before the remains of the 13 other "Silent Warriers" were returned, and this visit to the area was of special interest to me.

I was in the USAF Security Service from 1961 to 1964 and stationed at Trabzon, Turkey, in 1963/4. We lived with this possibility daily being on the Black Sea only 90 miles from the then border with Soviet Georgia. The veil was finally lifted in 1997, and NSA now has a memorial park for these airmen who paid the ultimate price unknown and unacknowledged at that time.

Thanks for this outstanding documentary of the air war that took place during this period of the Cold War. There are some excellent information and links to be found at [link]
