999 is a British docudrama television series presented by Michael Buerk, that premiered in 1992, on BBC1. The series gets its name from the emergency telephone number used in the United Kingdom. In the first series, each episode includes two reconstructions of real emergencies, using actors as well as some of the real people involved in the emergency.[1] By the second series, episodes of 999 included more reconstructions.[2] In 2002, it was announced that the series had been cancelled.

Throughout New Year’s Saturday, Watch broadcasts some of the most recent Doctor Who Christmas specials, which have rapidly become festive TV institutions.

The specials include The Christmas Invasion, which sees the Doctor take Rose home for Christmas to spend the festive season with her family.

That’s not all the Doctor wants from his trip back to Earth – his recent regeneration has left him weak and he needs to build himself back up to full strength. But, while he’s in bed recuperating, Earth comes under attack from the evil Sycorax, who have employed deadly Santas and Christmas trees to help with their invasion plan. With the Doctor unable to help, it’s down to the Tyler family to put up a fight.

In The Runaway Bride, the Doctor is freewheeling across the galaxy after his emotional parting of the ways with Rose Tyler. He gets a huge surprise when Donna, a bride late for her wedding, strangely materialises onto the TARDIS. He not only has to help her get to the church on time, but take on the deadly Empress of Racnoss whose presence seems to indicate that there’s more to Donna than meets the eye. Also starring Catherine Tate and Sarah Parish.

Finally, and a Watch premiere, Kylie Minogue guest stars in The Voyage Of The Damned as Astrid, a waitress on the cruiser ship Titanic from the planet Sto. After observing Earth and its ancient Christmas traditions, the ship collides with meteors and loses the majority of its crew and passengers.

But this is no natural disaster – soon, the Doctor, Astrid and the last remaining crew and survivors are in a battle with an alien force that have been lurking on the ship, ready to kill all aboard.

The Doctor Who Day finishes with a tantalising glimpse into the future, when Doctor Who Confidential chats to the new, 11th Doctor, Matt Smith.

UKTV has acquired MasterChef Australia to premiere on its pay TV channel Watch.

The Australian spinoff of the popular BBC Two series will receive its UK television premiere on Watch in January 2010 before playing out on another of UKTV’s pay TV channels, Good Food, from May 2010.

"We are thrilled to have secured the hugely successful Australian spinoff of MasterChef," said UKTV's director of programme acquisitions Catherine Mackin.

"Not only does it guarantee fresh and exclusive new content for both Watch and Good Food, but it also reinforces UKTV’s position as a one of the UK’s biggest acquirer of quality international shows."

Heather Mills and Katie Price are among a number of famous faces who will brave a series of extreme theme park rides as part of a new TV gameshow on Watch.


Scream If You Know the Answer! is a 10x30-minute series produced by Lion TV where teams, including the likes of Phil Tufnell and Matt Wills, will join up with members of the public to compete for a £5,000 prize pot.

Hosted by Blue singer Duncan James, the teams will wear special cameras will take part on theme park rides at Thorpe Park. They include rollercoaster Stealth and Tidal Wave, which plunges 85 feet, creating a huge wall of water.

It was ordered by UKTV director of entertainment commissioning Lisa Perrin, channel head Paul Moreton and UKTV director of entertainment, Christian Drobnyk.

It is executive produced by Perrin, Tess Cuming and Simon Welton with Andy Scott as series producer and Tony Gregory as director.

The series is scheduled to air next year.

UKTV has commissioned crime thriller Murdoch Mysteries for a third season on Alibi.

Shaftesbury Films is currently producing the 13-episode series in Canada and the UK, with UKTV co-funding it in collaboration with ITV Global Entertainment. The programme will premiere on the crime drama channel in February 2010.

UKTV's Christian Drobnyk revealed that series two of the show "nearly doubled Alibi's slot average ratings, outperforming every other crime drama series in peak".

He continued: "Innovative funding deals like this make a lot of sense for UKTV right now - they provide fresh, quality content that compliments popular BBC titles and our own home-grown commissions - so it's no surprise that we're on the lookout to do more."

ITV director of co-productions and acquisitions Emmanuelle Namiech added: "Murdoch Mysteries is a superb example of how international co-production funding can bring to life a universally popular show, with incredibly strong local appeal.

"We're delighted to be working with Shaftesbury and Alibi on another great instalment of a very unique and popular series."

Set in 1890s Toronto, Murdoch Mysteries stars Yannick Bisson as William Murdoch and Coronation Street's Thomas Craig as Inspector Brackenreid. The third season will also feature a guest appearance by Lisa Faulkner.

Alibi's Steve Hornsey said: "We're particularly excited that some of the latest series is being filmed in Bristol as Murdoch becomes embroiled in a complex plot spanning two continents, a British spin which is sure to appeal to Alibi viewers even more."

The Advertising Standards Authority has rapped UKTV's Yesterday channel over three excessively noisy adverts it aired recently.

As flagged up by the ASA's monitoring team, the ads in question were shown during Catherine Cookson drama The Round Tower and were deemed to be alarmingly noisy compared to the "surrounding programme material".

In response, Yesterday acknowledged that the problem was due to the quiet nature of the programme in comparison to the adverts.

The ASA accepted that The Round Tower was a "quiet drama with a lot of dialogue", and that several of the ads carried were at a consistent sound level.

However, by using a subjective loudness meter, it found that three ads were at least three decibels louder than the loudest part of the programme, and occasionally four decibels higher.

Therefore, the ASA ruled that the ads were "excessively noisy" compared to the programme and told Yesterday to be careful in future with the loudness of its adverts to ensure that it complies with the TV Advertising Standards Code.

The regulator also recommended the setting of a uniform subjective loudness level for the channel which takes into account the particular volume of its programming.

UKTV Style and UKTV Gardens will be relaunched as Home and Really as the next step in the broadcaster's plans to rebrand its entire portfolio of channels.

Gardening output will be shifted to Home when it takes over from UKTV Style on April 30, with Really to be positioned as a "zeitgeisty and noisy female brand", said UKTV director of factual, lifestyle and new media Jane Mote.

"Seventy eight per cent of viewing to UKTV Style was to its home content," Mote told Brand Republic. "So we see the rebrand as being clearer to consumers about what to expect on the station and giving them more of what they want."

UKTV People and UKTV Documentary were the broadcaster's first factual channels to be rebranded. Entertainment channels UKTV Gold and UKTV Drama became Watch, G.O.L.D. and Alibi last October. No details have yet been announced about any changes to UKTV Food.

UKTV History will be rebranded Yesterday early next year, it was confirmed today.

A rebrand of UKTV's factual channel portfolio was confirmed in August, with UKTV People and UKTV Documentary already scheduled to turn into Blighty and Eden respectively.

Yesterday will shift the emphasis of UKTV's history channel onto modern events, with series such as Seven Ages of Rock and The Alan Clark Diaries being sprinkled into the programming mix along with new acquisitions including International Terrorism.

"Yesterday sets out to redefine what a history channel can be about," said UKTV controller Matthew Littleford. "We promise to deliver a channel packed with shows that offer a more inclusive, accessible and entertaining approach to the past. This change adds to the excitement already created by our new brands Eden and Blighty and together our three new Factual channels will be a major draw for audience into the documentary section of the EPG."

Richard Kingsbury, currently the channel head of UKTV History and UKTV Food, will continue in the role to lead Yesterday through its relaunch.

Jane Mote, UKTV's director of factual, lifestyle and new media, said: "There has been an explosion of interest in personal history recently witnessed by the growth of genealogy and the popularity of nostalgia based programmes. Yesterday will be a place where viewers can indulge in the past without apology. The greatest stories, greatest music and greatest characters of the past are captured here in all their glory."

UKTV is considering a massive rebrand across its entire bouquet of channels following the success of UKTV G2's transformation into Dave.

According to Broadcast, the broadcaster - a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Virgin Media's content division - is considering dropping UKTV from some channel names and giving others entirely new names.

The trade magazine cited a "well-placed source" as saying: "All viewers care about is the channel and the content, not the UKTV network name. If Gold keeps the same name, viewers will not know that there are new shows on it."

It is understood that the plans are on hold pending the arrival of UKTV's new director of marketing and communications, Tom Lucas, who has joined the broadcaster from ITV.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Starts 2nd July at 7pm on UKTV GOLD.

UKTV has signed a seven-year deal with lottery operator Camelot to air the EuroMillions draw.

The draw is currently being shown on Challenge, but will be broadcast live every Friday on UKTV Gold from March 2 at 10.20pm.

James McCourt, who already fronts the existing draw on Challenge, will continue to do so for the UKTV Gold show. Additional content will be provided through two new entertainment formats featuring comedian Nick Hancock, which will rotate quarterly.

The draw is played in nine European countries and last year set a £125 million world record for the largest jackpot.

The 10-minute production is made by Endemol-owned Initial and is UKTV Gold’s first advertiser-funded programme.
