UKTV goes widescreen

You may remember that last year we asked you if you'd like us to start broadcasting in widescreen. Well, we've had an overwhelmingly positive response and have some good news for you.

From Thursday 31st January, all 9 UKTV channels will be capable of broadcasting in widescreen. Due to our extensive back catalogue, we can't broadcast every programme in widescreen immediately, but we'll be increasing our library throughout 2008. This means you'll be able to see some great Hollywood blockbusters, the best of classic BBC shows and UKTV's exclusive new content the way it was meant to be seen - in widescreen.

But don't worry about our older programmes. We won't mess around with them and will continue to show them in the original format they were filmed in.

To ensure you get the maximum enjoyment from widescreen, make sure you set up your television correctly. Just follow these simple instructions which only have to be done once:

SKY DIGITAL VIEWERS

IF YOU HAVE A WIDESCREEN (16:9) TV
  • Using your Sky remote control, press the "services" button
  • Select option number "4" which is labelled as "System Setup"
  • Then choose option "1" which is called "Picture Settings"
  • Your box will then highlight the "Picture Format" option. Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "16:9"
  • Scroll down to "Save Settings" and press "select" to confirm


  • IF YOU HAVE A STANDARD (4:3) TV
  • Using your Sky remote control, press the "services" button
  • Select option number "4" which is labelled as "System Setup"
  • Then choose option "1" which is called "Picture Settings"
  • Your box will then highlight the "Picture Format" option. Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "4:3L"*
  • Scroll down to "Save Settings" and press "select" to confirm


  • IF YOU HAVE A SECOND TELEVISION CONNECTED TO YOUR SKY BOX
  • Select the picture format for your main television as per the instructions above
  • Then highlight "Second Location Picture Format"
  • If your second TV is a widescreen set select "16:9" and if it is a standard TV select "4:3L"*
  • Scroll down to "Save Settings" and press "select" to confirm


  • * you can also choose "4:3" however this will mean you will lose the left and right hand side of the picture and will miss some of the programme


    VIRGIN MEDIA VIEWERS

    IF YOU HAVE A WIDESCREEN (16:9) TV
  • Using your Virgin remote control, press either the "home" or "guide" button
  • Select option number "8" which is labelled as "Settings"
  • Then choose option "4" which is called "Change Display & Audio Settings"
  • Your box will then highlight the "TV display format" option. Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "Widescreen"
  • Press "OK" to confirm


  • IF YOU HAVE A STANDARD (4:3) TV
  • Using your cable remote control, press either the "home" or "guide" button
  • Select option number "8" which is labelled as "Settings"
  • Then choose option "4" which is called "Change Display & Audio Settings"
  • Your box will then highlight the "TV display format" option. Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "4:3 letterbox"*
  • Press "OK" to confirm


  • * you can also choose "4:3 normal" however this will mean you will lose the left and right hand side of the picture and will miss some of the programme


    FREEVIEW VIEWERS

    Please note that a variety of different manufacturers produce Freeview boxes so these instructions are only to be used as a guide. Please consult the user manual that came with your Freeview box for full details.

    IF YOU HAVE A WIDESCREEN (16:9) TV
  • Using your Freeview remote control, press the "menu" button
  • Select the option "Picture Settings" (exact wording may differ)
  • Scroll down to the option "Picture Format" or "Screen Format" (exact wording may differ)
  • Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "Widescreen" or "16:9" (exact options may differ)
  • Press "OK" or "Select" to confirm (and follow any on-screen instructions)


  • IF YOU HAVE A STANDARD (4:3) TV
  • Using your Freeview remote control, press the "menu" button
  • Select the option "Picture Settings" (exact wording may differ)
  • Scroll down to the option "Picture Format" or "Screen Format" (exact wording may differ)
  • Using the left and right arrows on your remote, select "4:3 Letterbox" (exact options may differ)
  • Press "OK" or "Select" to confirm (and follow any on-screen instructions)


  • * if you are presented with any other 4:3 option apart from 4:3 Letterbox you will lose the left and right hand side of the picture and will miss some of the programme
