Measuring
Decide on the height of the border in the room.
Tip: Door frames and windows will break up the border so bear this in mind when you're deciding on the height.
Use a tape measure, pencil and a spirit level to make several light marks around the room at your chosen height. -

Pasting and hanging
Measure the longest uninterrupted wall area and cut off a piece of the border to this size, plus about 50mm (2in) extra.
Brush the back of the border with wallpaper paste and work along the wall, pressing it into place. This is easier if you have a helper to hold the start of the length as you work around the room.
Tip: If you're not confident with wallpaper paste, look out for a self-adhesive border. -

Finishing
Continue around the walls, trimming the border to fit around door and window frames.
Press out any bubbles with a damp cloth or sponge.
Tip: You may have to make one or two vertical cuts at internal corners to allow the border to fold around the walls neatly.
