How to make a pelmet

You will need:
- Lengths of 6-8mm (1/4-1/3in) MDF
- Spirit level
- Jigsaw or hand saw
- Try square
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Electric drill
- Screwdriver
- 50mm (2in) chipboard screws
- Wood glue
- Wall plugs and fixings
- Abrasive paper
First Steps
You can make the pelmet from 6-8mm (0.25-0.3in) MDF.
To find the overall width of the pelmet, measure the window opening and add at least 100mm (4in) onto each end to allow the curtains to be drawn back without creasing. The depth measurement should be the distance from the wall to the front of the curtains plus at least 25mm (1in).
Transfer the measurements to the board.
Tip: You can buy pierced and shaped MDF panels if you want to make a more decorative pelmet.
Covered Pelmets
You can cover the pelmet instead of painting it with the curtain or other matching fabric. Rufflette, tel (0161) 998 1811 makes a self-adhesive backing that can be used to hold the fabric onto the MDF.
Safety
Remember to protect your eyes when drilling overhead by wearing safety specs. If you think there may be a wire or pipe above the window, always check the wall with a cable and pipe detector (sold in DIY stores).

Cutting out the front piece
Cut out the front piece of the pelmet with a handsaw or jigsaw.
Hold the board firmly in a portable workbench or clamped to a bench as you cut.
Tip: If you want to make the front of your pelmet a special shape, make a card template exactly half the width of the section. Draw one half of your design on the card and tape this to the MDF. Cut around the pattern, untape the pattern and flip it over to use as a template on the other half of the board. This will ensure the pattern is symmetrical. -

Cutting out and fixing the side and top pieces
Cut out the two side pieces of the pelmet and fix these to the front with glue and 50mm (2in) chipboard screws.
For the top of the pelmet, use another section of MDF cut to fit inside the front of the side pieces. Fix with more 50mm (2in) chipboard screws and glue.
Tip: Now is the time to paint the MDF. Use an MDF primer and your chosen finished colour in matt or silk finish emulsion. See Painting Interior Woodwork and Metal for more tips. -

Attach the brackets
The pelmet will be attached to the wall with small metal right-angle brackets.
Make holes in the wall with a hammer drill, add wall plugs or cavity fixings and screw the brackets to the wall. -

Fix the pelmet
Hold the pelmet in place with a spirit level along the top and mark through the metal bracket fixing holes when it is level.
Screw the pelmet to the brackets inside rear edges of the sides and top.
