How to fix a stiff door

You will need:
- Hand plane or electric planer
- Portable workbench
- Screwdrivers
- Pair of wooden wedges
- Screwdriver
- Mallet
Is a sticky door driving you mad? It's a simple DIY project to tackle the problem, so don't put it off - here are the simple steps to smoothing it out.
Time to complete job: Allow two hours to remove the door, tackle the problem and re-fit.
Approximate budget: Hand planes cost from around £12.
First Steps
Wood swells as it absorbs moisture from the air during damp weather. If you can, wait until the weather is dry before removing any wood from the window or door as the wood will shrink again in the summer months.

Removing the door
To find where the door is sticking against the frame, close the door and pass a thin piece of card around the edge of the door. Use a pencil to mark the places where the card sticks.
To remove the door, put wooden wedges underneath for support and unscrew the hinges. You may need to chip away thick paint from the screwheads with an old chisel.
Remove screws from the top hinge first, then hold the door firmly as you undo the bottom hinge.
Tip: You can often loosen a stubborn screw by giving the screwdriver a sharp tap with a mallet. -

Planing the door
Clamp the door on edge in a portable workbench. Set your plane to take fine shavings and work the plane over the marked areas with long smooth strokes.
If you have to reduce the height or width of a new door by more than about 5mm (0.2in), cut off the waste with a handsaw or circular saw then sand the edge smooth.
Tip: Regularly re-check the fit by holding the door in the frame. There should only be a 2mm (0.08in) gap all around the sides and top of the frame and 3-4mm (0.1-0.15in) at the bottom. -

Replacing the door
Place the door on the wedges, at right angles to the frame, and screw the hinge flaps onto the frame. Check the door opens and closes without sticking.
Tip: If the door strains the hinges and doesn't close fully, the hinge recesses are too deep in the frame or door edge. Cut out some pieces of cereal packet card to fit under the hinge flaps until the top of the hinge is flush with the wood surface. Re-fit the screws.
