Rustic Wood

Rustic Wood

You don't have to live in an idyllic rural retreat to get the latest back-to-basics trend for raw, rustic wood. With a few key touches, city dwellers can turn an urban interior into a country-look homestead the Waltons would be proud to call their own.

Create the perfect backdrop for this home-on-the-range theme by laying simple and unsophisticated plank flooring and staining a deep teak or oak for a rich, log cabin effect underfoot. If you yearn for extra authenticity and have the time and the inclination, clad your walls with plank-effect panels or simple tongue and groove, then paint a classic, buttery cream which compliments wood perfectly.

Avoid fussy fabric treatments at windows, and instead invest in plantation-style louvre shutters. Custom-made shutters can set you back a pretty penny, so if your budget won't stretch to this, opt for wooden Venetian blinds instead which are equally as striking. When it comes to choosing seating, you can go for either a very folksy look or veer towards an earthy, contemporary feel.

For the folksy route, choose oversized squashy calico sofas in a Shabby Chic style and fill with cushions and throws in traditional plaids, ticking and Shaker-influenced naïve folk-art patterns. Those who want a more modern country style should consider investing in a modular sofa in a natural shade of tactile boucle or loungy leather, then add cushions and throws in unrefined raw linen, cotton and hessian.

In bedrooms and dining rooms, choose beds and dining tables in uncomplicated, plain shapes. The wooden theme comes into its own when it comes to deciding on accessories. There are a host of unfinished, beautifully rich wooden pieces to choose from including hand carved chunks of wood designed to be bedside tables, unembellished bowls, vases and frames in shades ranging from honey to thick treacle, and lamp bases in fluid, sculptural shapes which echo the natural grain of the wood.

Add an elemental combination of slate, stone and simple ceramic accessories to the mix for extra depth and texture. Stripped metal shines in this bare-it-all look, so take radiators back to their original finish, or replace with unfinished, traditional-style classroom designs.
