Shabby Chic

Shabby Chic

Let your bohemian side unabashedly take over, as we say goodbye to straight-laced glamour and hello to pared-down shabby chic. This is a style that luxuriates in junk shop finds, antique linen, soft florals and Rococo accents. It's soft, feminine and oh-so-comforting. So get ready to go shabby chic.

Be as creative and individual as you want when you're designing a shabby chic room.

If the sound of a distressed wardrobe, an antique dresser and a wool shag pile rug, surrounded by floral fabrics and low lighting tickles your fancy then read on!

With shabby chic anything goes which means it doesn't have to be pricey. In fact most of the materials and accessories that will look best will be second hand. So, you can achieve a 'chic' look at a cheap price.

Go bohemian... go rough round the edges... go shabby chic!
Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams

Guarantee yourself sweet dreams by bedding down with an antique-style bed. Indulge in the real thing, such as our featured French bed (circa 1870), or fool them all with a too-good-to-tell replica, made old by using a distressed paint effect. To achieve the effect, simply paint a darker colour onto your bed. When dry, rub the edges of the frame with a candle, then follow up with a lighter colour. When dry, gently rub with a piece of fine-grade sandpaper or wire wool and the darker colour will peep through.
Lacy things

Lacy things

Cover your bed with different textured fabrics for that devil-may-care, arty look. This patterned blanket is from J M Davidson, (020) 7313 9532; our hand-stitched quilt is an antique Welsh Victorian blanket; the pillowcases are made from an old French linen tablecloth. As a cheaper alternative to French linen, try adorning old pillows with lace from your local haberdashery department.
Coming Up Flowers

Coming Up Flowers

Fill in the gaps with a multitude of interesting features, such as this mock Rococo side cabinet bought from a second-hand shop, or a wool shag pile rug. Floral fanciers will be thrilled to know that the shabby chic room requires only a laissez-faire attitude to floral arranging. Chop off some hydrangea heads and delicately place in some fine porcelain, such as these exquisite early Derby plates. Contrast the pale blooms with this vibrant art nouveau green vase.
