Step one: Make a list

Step one: Make a list

Take a good long look at your existing items of furniture. Now that you've decided your colour scheme, do they still fit in with what you've chosen? Or is it time they were consigned to the tip? What's the point of putting up with an uncomfortable sofa that's seen better days or that won't suit your new scheme? However, if yours still has plenty of life in it and just needs an update, some new throws and cushions might do the job. Or think about investing in a new set of loose covers. Companies such as Plumbs Covers will come to your home and measure up for you – so you don't have to be a whiz with the sewing machine!
Step two: Check your measurements

Step two: Check your measurements

OK, it's boring – but go back to the plan you sketched out and double-check your measurements. Pay close attention to the width of doors, taking into account which way the door opens and how wide the gap is. There's nothing more embarrassing (or annoying) than finding out when it's too late that your gorgeous new sofa/table won't get through the living room door, especially as many stores won't take the item back or refund your money.
Step three: Choose a style

Step three: Choose a style

Although it's tempting to go for something really bold and trendy, when it comes to large, expensive items of furniture make really sure that you love it before you embark on a costly mistake. Big items are usually investments rather than throw-away pieces and should offer some scope for adaptation at a later date. While you may love that trendy black and white Rococo sofa now – how will you feel about it in five years' time? A neutral-coloured one might be better in the long run as you can always dress it up. It goes without saying that classic styling will see you through many years of changing schemes and themes, but that doesn't mean you've got to go for something boring. Look for classic but with a twist – interesting details such as splayed legs on tables, slightly exaggerated shapes or things made in unusual or unexpected materials are all long-term winners.
