Make a Bathroom Storage Chest

Make a Bathroom Storage Chest

Take simple wooden CD boxes and turn them into some stylish storage for your bathroom. They're perfect for storing those small bathroom essentials and perfectly compliment the relaxed, natural look of the modern coastal bathroom.

Time to complete the job: 1 day (with drying time).
Approximate budget: Wooden CD boxes from £6; Knobs from 80p each.

You will need:

  • Wooden boxes
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood primer
  • Vinyl emulsion in your chosen shade
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Paintbrush
  • Knobs (one for each drawer)

Sand the boxes

Sand surfaces which are to be painted. Unfinished wooden products tend to be quite rough and ready, so be ready to use some elbow grease to get the surface you need for a smooth paint finish.

Tip: Don't forget to sand the sides of the boxes as they will be visible when the drawers are opened.

Mark the position for the knobs

Using a ruler, draw a line diagonally from each corner across the boxes to mark the centre position for each knob.

Tip: Don't draw the line all the way across - just make a small 'x' in the centre to guide the drill.

Drilling the holes for the knobs

Using a drill bit slightly larger than the screws for the knobs, drill a hole in the centre of each box.

Tip: Drill from the outside of the boxes to the inside to keep the visible surface clean. Don't push too hard on the drill or the wood will splinter.
