Make Your Own Polka-dot Glassware

Make Your Own Polka-dot Glassware

Give old glasses a lift with glass etching cream. It couldn't be easier, so don't feel you have to stop at matching tumblers and jug. Etch a vase, a tray, wineglasses... And if polka dots aren't to your taste, then choose any other stencil style.

Time to complete the job: 1 hour.
Approximate budget: Glass etching cream from £6 for 3oz.

You will need:

  • Tumblers
  • Glass jug
  • Stencil
  • Glass etching cream
  • Small paintbrush
  • Masking tape
First Steps: Cut out your own stencil from stiff paper if you have a specific design in mind, otherwise check the wide selection of stencils on offer at Stencil Library.

Tip: Glass etching cream is toxic, so always wear a long-sleeved shirt and rubber gloves when working with it. Splash-proof glasses and a mask are also useful.

Choose your glassware

Buy a cheap set of plain tumblers and a tall vase at your local kitchenware shop or pound shop - the plainer the better for this project. Or use any or glassware you have around the house. Why not mix and match?

Clean the glass well

Make sure the glass is clean and free from any smudges or greasy fingerprints. You want the best surface possible for the etching cream.

Tip: Use newspaper and glass cleaner to clean the glass - it will give a sparkling finish.
