How to fit a window lock
You will need:

Hammer
Screwdriver
An unlocked window is an open invitation to intruders, and older wooden frames are especially vulnerable. Making your windows secure is a quick job and only needs a few tools.
Time to complete job: Most locks can be fitted in 15-30 minutes.

Step 1: Fitting locks on wooden casement windows
It's important to fit enough locks to make the casement resistant to forcing from the outside. One lock near the top edge and one near the bottom will usually provide the strongest option.
Mark the positions for the screw holes on the opening window. -
Step 2: Finishing
Close the window and mark the position of the second part of the lock on the frame.
Screw this part of the lock into place and check the lock works smoothly.
Tip: If the window locks with a key, make you have spares and keep a set close to every window so that they can be found in an emergency. -
Step 3: Fitting locks on sash windows
Secure a sash window by fitting a pair of locking bolts through the central meeting rails of the sash frames.
Close the windows and drill two holes through the inner and outer rails.
Tip: To stop your drill bit going all the way through the outer rail, wrap a piece of tape around the shank as a handy depth guide. Check the lock maker's instructions for the depth needed. -
Step 4: Finishing
Tap the brass barrels into the holes.
The bolt that holds the two sashes together slides through the barrels and is screwed tightly with a key.
Tip: If you've just moved and need to secure sash windows quickly, drill a starter hole through the frames as above and simply fit two long woodscrews.
