How to install a new light fitting

If you're stuck with a single bare light fitting in the middle of the room, it's time to rethink your lighting. The traditional pendant light is fixed to a ceiling rose by a flex and gives a harsh shadowy light. But it is easy swap to a trendy track light or group of spots that will transform the look of your room.
Time to complete job: About 30 minutes.
Approximate budget: New light fittings cost from around £25.

Step 1: Unscrew the ceiling rose
Turn off the power supply to the existing light fitting and unscrew the ceiling rose to reveal the wires.
Make a note of the positions of all the wires and use tape to help you identify them. -
Step 2: Disconnect the old light fitting or flex
If there is an old light fitting in place, remove the light bulb and shade first.
Unscrew the terminals holding the down flex of the old light fitting and remove it.
Unscrew the terminals holding the power cable wires and straighten the wires. -
Step 3: Attach the new light fitting
Check the wiring instructions for the new light fitting. You will probably have to fit some sort of new fixing plate to the ceiling. If you can't use the old screw fixings points, drill new holes and fix the plate.
If the new fixings aren't firm, you can either move the fitting to one side or fix a timber batten between the ceiling joists as a fixing point. However, this does mean taking up a part of the flooring of the room above, or going into the loft, to fix the batten. -
Step 4: Connect the new light fitting
Attach the new fitting to the back plate and add the bulbs. Turn on the power and check the lights work!
