How to colourwash floorboards
You will need:

Woodstain
Paintbrush or roller
Masking tape
Flooring grade varnish
You can give your floorboards an attractive bleached look in just a few hours by following our simple colourwashing instructions. You can colour the boards with a variety of wood stains and tinted varnishes. Check to make sure they will let the grain of the wood show through when dry.
Time to complete job: 4 hours for a medium-sized room.
Approximate budget: Woodstains cost around £25 for a 5L can.

Step 1: Preparation
Old floorboards must be clean of any existing finish before they can be colourwashed. Vacuum up any dust and dirt. Take off your shoes so you don't damage the new surface as you work.
Tip: Protect the edges of skirting boards and fire hearths with masking tape. -
Step 2: Painting
Working from the corner of the room furthest from the door, brush on the first coat of colourwash, working along the grain of the boards.
Continue across the room, working the colour along each board. Try to work quickly so the colour is brushed evenly over the grain before it dries.
Leave the first coat to dry. You can then decide whether to deepen the colour with an extra coat.
You can experiment with borders and patterns with different coloured paints. Mask the edges of each section with masking tape for a neat edge.
Tip: You can also use a narrow foam roller to apply most finishes - check the paint instructions. -
Step 3: Sealing
Some woodwashes are a tinted varnish that will protect as well as colour the wood.
If you have used a colour only, seal the boards with at least two coats of flooring grade varnish.
