Step 1: Preparation

Floorboards should be covered with hardboard to form a smooth level surface. Stagger the joints and fix with panel pins every 100mm (4in) around the edge and every 150mm (6in) in the centre.
If you have solid concrete floors you may need to spread a self-levelling compound over the floor to fill any hollows.
If you have ceramic tiles, spread a 3mm (0.12in) layer of self-levelling compound over the surface with a trowel to fill the joints between the tiles.

Step 2: Laying the vinyl

Vacuum up any dust. Take off your shoes so that any grit isn't trodden into the underside of the new vinyl.
Starting against the longest continuous wall, unroll the sheet of vinyl. Move the roll until the pattern is parallel with the wall and leave around 100mm (4in) of overlap against the wall as you unroll the sheet.
As the vinyl is unrolled, try to keep it as flat as possible around the edges by making vertical cuts into the overlapping waste.
For a neat finish, cut downwards into the corners and trim away the waste so that you form a V-shape.
