Laying Vinyl Flooring
Vinyl and lino floor coverings are often the best option for a bathroom or kitchen. The wipe-clean surfaces resist wear and stains as well as being softer underfoot than tiles or wood. Lino is a less flexible sheet flooring that is more difficult to lay than vinyl - so it may be worth calling in a professional.
Time to complete job: A weekend.
Approximate budget: From as little as £50 for a small room. The cheapest sheet vinyl costs around £5.99 per metre.
You will need:
- Roll of vinyl flooring
- Craft knife
- Steel straight edge
- Tape measure
- Wood block
- Paint scraper
- Ball paint pen
- Double-sided flooring tape
- Self-levelling compound (if the floor is concrete)
First Steps
Bring the vinyl roll into the room the day before laying so that the vinyl can warm up, making it more flexible. It's also worth turning on your central heating for a couple of hours before starting work.
Step 1: Preparation
Floorboards should be covered with hardboard to form a smooth level surface. Stagger the joints and fix with panel pins every 100mm (4in) around the edge and every 150mm (6in) in the centre. If you have solid concrete floors you may need to spread a self-levelling compound over the floor to fill any hollows.
If you have ceramic tiles, spread a 3mm (0.12in) layer of self-levelling compound over the surface with a trowel to fill the joints between the tiles.
Step 2: Laying the vinyl
Vacuum up any dust. Take off your shoes so that any grit isn't trodden into the underside of the new vinyl.Starting against the longest continuous wall, unroll the sheet of vinyl. Move the roll until the pattern is parallel with the wall and leave around 100mm (4in) of overlap against the wall as you unroll the sheet.
As the vinyl is unrolled, try to keep it as flat as possible around the edges by making vertical cuts into the overlapping waste.
For a neat finish, cut downwards into the corners and trim away the waste so that you form a V-shape.
