Going Once

From the prestigious establishments of Christie's and Sotheby's, to the local venture where you may find the odd treasure or two, Britain's auction houses offer a similar fix of rapid-paced excitement, charm and flair - a great experience whether you've got a million in your back pocket, or possess nothing more than a curious eye...

South West: Dreweatt Neate
Founded in 1858 by Charles A Tricks, the Company was listed in an 1870 Street Directory of Bristol as Tricks, Son and Wallop of Bristol Chambers, Nicholas Street and Albion Chambers, Small Street as law stationers, auctioneers, etc. By 1901 Chas. A. Tricks & Son were in two premises in Nicholas Street in the centre of Bristol. During a sale, something in the region of 600 lots of general household effects is up for sale, with an abundance of Victorian, Edwardian and 1930's furniture, right through to contemporary items, as well as pictures, books and china.

Midlands: A.S.H. Auctions
A.S.H. Auctions was founded in 1994 by Lee Sheratt (Auctioneer) and Glennis Hughes (Auction Administrator). Their first venue was a local pub, but since then, the sale has moved on to new premises in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. At A.S.H, expect to find quality pottery from the 19th century (Royal Doulton, Beswick, Royal Worcester, Coalport) to more modern designers, such as Lorna Bailey.

South East: Christie's
One of the world's most renowned auction houses, Christie's in London is synonymous with good taste - and hefty prices (Van Gogh's 'Portrait of Dr Gachet' sold for the stupefying sum of £49.1m at Christie's, NY, in 1990). With most auctions free and open to the public, a day here provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of high art, and a chance to see masterful auctioneers keep an eye on those million-pound nods and winks.

North East: Boldon Auctions
Boldon Auctions was founded in 1981, initially covering Sunderland and South Tyneside, but now catering for the regions of Teeside, Tyneside and County Durham - sometimes beyond. With a solid base of expertise in Georgian and Victorian furniture, silver, paintings and ceramics, Boldon really come into their own in the field of Modern Design - introducing the region to sales of 1930s plywood furniture, 1950s, 60's and 70's Scandinavian and Italian furniture, and even some toys, postcards and assorted memorabilia.
