More about Amanda

With her sparkling eyes and glowing skin, Amanda Hamilton's a walking advertisement for the benefits of the ground-breaking detox methods featured in Spa Of Embarrassing Illnesses. Find out more about how she goes about making her diagnoses and whether she's ever truly been shocked by any of the cases she's seen...

You're back for a new series of Spa! if someone hasn't seen the show, could you describe it for them?
"It is the only show out there that genuinely changes lives. We get results where others fail - and we look at the deeper reasons behind illnesses and neuroses."

What can we expect in this new series?
"Real life drama, real life results all set in the stunning Alps. It is an amazing journey that each of our detoxers make - but not without some bumps along the way!"

What do you do when someone first comes to you with a condition that needs to be treated?
"Well, each person is unique and in order to be able to really help them I 'take a case' - so, a bit like a detective it is my job to piece together the history of why they are in their current situation - and of course, how best to get them out of it. It means going beyond the superficial and really figuring out the reasons why. For example, if someone developed eczema after a near-drowning incident you have to look at whether or not it was the stress of that which caused the skin problem. This was the case with Paul from our detox in Turkey (Spa Of Embarrassing Illnesses Series Three) and we helped him to cure himself completely through our mind-body approach."

You must have seen it all over the years, but has a condition shocked you?
"Honestly, none. I know it sounds strange but I have a different way of looking at people. I really enjoy looking beyond the problem to the solution. The challenge is when the client or detoxer does not actually want to follow advice - which does happen! At that stage you just have to give them your advice and hope that they use it - or more often than not, they call back in six months to try again!"

Your work in this area has been described 'ground-breaking'. Could you tell us how your approach differs from others in the field of detox and wellbeing?
"It is basic and complicated at the same time. In terms of detox the vast majority of 'detox solutions' out there help to 'mobilise' toxins - that is, your body moves them out of its stores (joints and fat cells generally) but what other programmes fail to do is to fully support the organs of elimination (the liver and digestive tract) to make sure that those toxins are actually moved out of the body. Many people who do a detox end up feeling sluggish, heavy and generally yuk - a sure sign you need more help to eliminate. The complicated part is to make this simple-sounding process really work! That takes a combination of the right supplements, the right juices or foods and the right therapists who know how to support the process on each step."

You're well known for developing at-home detox programmes. If someone wanted to start a detox at home, what would be the first thing you would recommend?
"Detoxing at home is a great idea. I had to focus on a programme for 'at home' detoxing because of the amazing demand from people wanting to feel (and look better) that have been inspired from watching Spa. I have various home detox regimes according to how intensively people want to detox - but all are based on the same supplements and system from the Spa itself. Home kits cost from £14.95."
