Catwalk Challenge: Colour

Catwalk Challenge: Colour

To entice you away from blacks and greys, The Clothes Show's Caryn casts her expert eye over this season's brave new brights and offers her advice on how to wear them.

So come on, liven up those drab winter days and dazzle, just like our catwalk challenge models!

"I love a bit of colour for autumn and winter. It's one of the easiest ways to create impact and you can wear it in a variety of ways, from accessories to outerwear.

"A few well-placed colourful pieces can also even up your body symmetry - and, for the outgoing and confident, there's also the all-over option!

"On my site howtolookgood.com, I show you how to wear colour too and there are lots of pictures in the catwalk and high street section to show you what's out there. You can even ask me your question in 'Ask Caryn,' so why not come and have a look?

"But back to colour - and my tips for making it work for you.

  • Use a neutral colour as a base.

  • Let one colour be the dominant tone and others supporting.

  • Check that it works with your skin tone by holding it to your face in daylight.

  • Wear it away from your face if it is a colour you like that doesn't suit your complexion.

  • Standard shapes
"Adding colour to your wardrobe is a great way to update your look and you can really have fun with it because, as a standard shape, you have less styling tools to consider.

"How about wearing a classic black polo neck and adding a brightly coloured vest over the top? If you are more conventional, pick a bright satin blouse - there are neon pinks right through to more subdued purples. Add a touch of the colour you have chose to your eye make-up to carry the colour through.

    Tall shapes
"Many tall women feel they stand out enough already and don't want to use colour, but in dark colours they look stern and sometimes even taller.

"If using colour feels bold and attention seeking, start by adding a flash of colour as part of your accessories - a belt or a bag - before you move to a whole garment.

"You don't have to pick out brights either, subdued colours can work just as well to soften your look. And use the colour to break up the vertical line your body makes. Colour is instantly feminising too and has a great effect on the people around you - just try it and see.

    Curvy shapes
"If you are curvy, I bet you love a bit of colour. Good. But use it to streamline your body by choosing colours from the same colour grouping like browns in rich chocolate colours complimented by lighter tones and highlighted with a touch or orange or maroon. Or purples, blacks and navys.

"There are many groups you can make depending on your own preferences, but what I'm saying is that a riot of colour - say red, yellow and green all on one body - will not give you the elongation or the sophistication you want. Buy your colour this season using the knowledge of what you already have in your wardrobe so that you have lots of items that will compliment each other.

    Petite shapes
"Add colour, but keep it sophisticated. Any flat shades that looks as if they could have been used in a school uniform need to be avoided, for example primary or royal blue.

"Seek out more contemporary tones. Iced colours are better than pastels, rich opulent hues look more sophisticated then washed-out flat tones and don't place bright colour too low down your body if you are wearing the neutral or black colour at the top, as this will cut your body in half and foreshorten you more.

"That's it for this week, my style divas. Next week, I'll be talking about Nu-tec and to know what that is (if you don't already) - you have to watch the show! So let's catch up here after Catwalk Challenge has hit your screens.

    Happy shopping!
