Catwalk Challenge: Fetish Wear

The latest trend to prowl off the catwalk is edgy and, if you follow it to the letter, definitely not for the faint-hearted. Caryn Franklin shares her thoughts on the fetish influence that has now made its presence felt on the high street too, with tips on how to wear it, whatever your shape.

OK, let's get this one straight: fetish wear is really only shorthand on Planet Fashion for studs and leatherwear worn in such a way that it looks chic rather than cheap.

As with all trends, this one pops up to sauce-up the standard winter offering of dark colours and durable materials like leather. How you wear it is up to you, but my advice is buy classic styles and spice up with accessories. These of course can be generously donated to your favourite second hand shop once the season is over - something I shall be recommending on my site howtolookgood.com to those who write in to 'Ask Caryn' this month.

I know from your responses to Body Matters, and also to my site, that you like your fashion features to contain the body shape tips. As usual, it is my aim to please so...

Let's start with slim line frames. Those of you who are suited to a fitted look can really shine in the variety of 'bodycon' party dresses out there. We picked the Future Classics design, available in independent boutiques, which has real dominatrix dazzle in its detail.

The bondage straps and buckles lend a subtle fetish flavour while the plunging neckline allows for plenty of cleavage and when you dress it up with black platforms, you'll be lengthening your legs. If you want to nail this one, make sure you have no VPL by checking your rear view in the mirror before you step out into the night.

If you are less inclined to embrace the trend with such eagerness, you'll find lots of garments that have extra noticeable zip features or statement buckles. The zip feature will continue through into spring as many young designers played with this trend in their catwalk collections. A zip-fronted dress similar to the one we feature in the show from TopShop will say it all.

If you are fuller or just less fashion-forward, then pick a jacket with some patent detailing and wear with classic pencil skirt and killer heels. Or fit your favourite blouse with a thick black patent belt to cinch in your waist. Your mission is to create a long lean silhouette that is classic first with a nod towards the magazine looks.

If you are curvaceous, it doesn't have to be strict and fitted in shape. Pick your favourite black dress, whether empire line or fitted at the waist, and glam it up with spike earrings, studded handbag and even patent shoes. Georgina Goodman has created some fabulous styles for Evans in a wider fit, so you can really get on board enjoying the full fetish fix.

Next week, I'll be talking about New Shape, so let's catch up here after you watched the forthcoming episode of Catwalk Challenge, only on The Clothes Show.
