Designer Profile: Sera Harsham Loftus
Sera Hersham Loftus is famous amongst the Notting Hill/Primrose Hill set for creating the kind of wonderfully feminine, romantic and sexy interiors that have seen her much in demand by the likes of Patsy Kensit, Courtney Love, Meg Matthews and Sadie Frost.
Even when she was a child, Madame Sera (as she likes to be known) would rearrange her mother's furniture and drape silk scarves over the lampshades in order to create coloured mood lighting. In her teens, she worked at the influential Fiorucci boutique and was soon set on a course that would bring her into contact with all manner of artistic movers and shakers.
Her look is very much Victorian bordello with overtones of shabby chic, but everything she does is still practical and robust. Her famous 'Rude' lamps for example (that resemble items of Victorian corsetry) have special, coloured linings that create a flattering glow that makes people feel sexy.
Of course, her own home is famous for its bohemian décor and even though it looks high maintenance, it's a functional, family home for her and her three children.
Madame Sera's latest project is a collaboration with international wallpaper house, Zuba, designing 'wallpapers that look as if they have come straight out of a Parisian brothel in the 1930's.' She also has a shop in Notting Hill that stocks her range of lighting and accessories.
