Designer Profile: Kelly Hoppen
South African-born Kelly Hoppen has design in her bones - her mother was an art dealer while her father worked in fashion - so it's no surprise that she's now one of the most sought-after and lauded interior designers in the world.
Kelly started out with a studio in Lots Road, Chelsea when she was barely 17 and has, over the years, developed the East-meets-West aesthetic that runs at the very heart of her work. But Kelly's style isn't just for the rich and famous - her diffusion range at Bhs has proved that great design can be both affordable and accessible.
Her design business is large - she employs 35 people who manage her projects around the globe - and, as well as her work for private individuals, she has created schemes for hotels, corporate spaces, private jets, yachts, ski chalets, a sports centre and the interiors of British Airways first-class cabins. Her latest project is a hotel in Barcelona for the Majestic Hotel Group.
Kelly has retail outlets in London's Brompton Cross as well as concessions within several top US stores. In 2006 she launched her collection at the Aati showroom in Dubai with one to follow this year at the Dubai branch of Harvey Nichols.
In addition to her design work, she has worked on ranges for Century Furniture, Wedgwood, Wool Classics carpets, Waterfront Bathrooms, Chesney's fireplaces and a range of fabrics for Savile Row tailors, Holland & Sherry. And she's still found time to write five books - the latest of which Kelly Hoppen, Home - From Concept To Reality has just been published by Jacqui Small (Sept 2007).
