Boutique Directory: Designer

There are so many things that are good about designer clothes - the names, the prestige, the cut, the fabrics... The only thing that is a little harder to swallow is the price. But as the fashion gurus at eve magazine suggest, why think of that gorgeous, stylish purchase as a expense when you could think of it as an investment?

Building a wardrobe that lasts is all about investment shopping. Splurge on timeless designer classics then bring in seasonal trends through less expensive pieces and accessories.

Once in a while, push the boat out and go for full-on luxe. Instead of buying the same black polo or replacing your belted woollen trench each year, buy it in cashmere and keep it forever.

Designer bags are a fabulous investment, but don't buy something that's very one seasonal. Patent is very current, but won't always be. If you can only afford one spending spree, classic bags from Chanel, Fendi, Mulberry, J&M Davidson and Anya Hindmarch are more likely outlive seasonal trends, especially if you stick to classic colours such as brown, black, grey and navy.

You'll never go wrong investing in a great pair of boots, particularly in black, either. Just keep the details simple. A classic pair of Jimmy Choo heels should do it. As for shoes? Well, designer heels can always be relied upon to make any outfit feel expensive. If you love those Sonia Rykiel platform heels now they will always make you feel special.

Do... check the washing instructions and stick to them. You're about to drop some serious cash, so make sure you can wear it more than once.

Don't... let your head be turned because of the name inside your designer find. Ask yourself, how much do you like it? Will you really wear it? Is it worth the price or is it that you're anticipating that moment when you get to say, 'This? Oh, it's just McQueen'?
