How to Wear the Grunge Trend
How to Wear the Grunge Trend
Yes people, grunge is back - and the trend is still being spearheaded by Marc Jacobs, the designer responsible for first flooding the catwalks with it in 1992. So wave goodbye to shouty, overtly sexy dressing, and embrace loose layers that are both flattering and feminine without showing too much flesh. Here's our top Clothes Show tips to help you get the look right...
The key to the grunge look is layering - oversize jumpers work well over leggings and sleeveless tops look great worn over long-sleeved ones. Keep accessories long and layered too to complement the look.
Choose fine, soft knits that drape well without adding bulk. You don't want to look like you've simply slung on all your jumpers at once before leaving the house.
Avoid bright and contrasting colours. Neutral, mushroomy tones show work best - your layers should harmonise with one another, not fight each other. Vary textures to add interest.
Don't feel like you have to go the whole "catwalk nomad" hog complete with knitted turban and drapery wafting in your wake. A simple soft grey dress over cigarette pants is both chic and practical enough for the office.
Complement your layered look with a huge, slouchy leather bag a la Nicole Ritchie. The bigger the better!
