Beat the Heat for Baby

  • Get a baby thermometer and fix it to a wall in your baby’s room. Make sure it is fixed it so that it is in the middle of the room away from any heat source, that the sun doesn’t shine on it during the day and that it can be seen easily. This should give you a reliable temperature reading. The optimum temperature for your baby’s room should be between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Above 70 degrees is too hot and you will need to remove blankets or clothes.

  • If the temperature is at 70 degrees and your baby has a vest and a sleep suit on, then he will only need a sheet and a thin blanket (preferably made of cotton). If the temperature rises, remove the blanket. If it falls to 65 degrees add another blanket and so on.

  • You can check your baby’s temperature by feeling the back of his neck or his tummy, if it feels hot then remove layers. Please also note that a doubled over blanket counts as two blankets.

  • You will also need to bear in mind that during the summer although it may be hot when your baby goes to bed, the temperature can drop quite dramatically during the night and it is a good idea to check him again in the night just to make sure that he is still comfortable and add/remove blankets as necessary.

We understand it is difficult to know what to do for the best, especially when it is really hot and you have no control over the weather, but as long as you follow these guidelines and monitor your baby’s room, then you will be fine. If you need further guidance and reassurance then please remember that you can call the Cow & Gate team on 08457 623 623 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and there will always be someone available for you to talk to.
