Beat the Heat for Baby

Is there an optimum temperature for a baby's room? Cow & Gate's Parenting Team share their tips on beating the heat in your baby's room.

Dear Parenting Team,

In this summer heat, the temperature in my six-month-old's room seems to be soaring. I'm a bit worried that he is going to overheat. What is the optimum temperature for a baby's room and should I do anything to try and cool his bedroom down?

Thanks,
Alison

Our Parenting Team replies:

Dear Alison,

Thanks for your enquiry. The summer months can be very hot and it is important to keep your baby's room as comfortable as possible. If your baby's room is in full sunlight for most of the day then chances are it will be very warm by the time your baby goes to bed at night. Babies can overheat but there are some precautions you can take to avoid this happening.

  • It will help if you draw the curtains in your baby's room so that they block out some of the direct sunlight.

  • Keep a window open when your baby is not in the room to let some air circulate. You may want to use an insect net to stop flying insects getting into the room.

  • You can leave the window slightly open at night time if it is really hot as long as your little one is not in a draught.
