An Interview with Nicki Waterman

We may be obsessed with how many calories are in our chicken sarnie, but surprisingly few of us know how much exercise we need to endure to burn them off! We caught up with Nicki Waterman, fitness guru to the rich and famous, to get her top fat-busting tips...

How did you become a fitness guru to the rich and famous?
"I worked at the David Lloyd club in London and set up all the personal training for the club. As I built up a clientele of celebrities I decided to set up a gym at home to give them more privacy."

What's it like working with celebrities and what sort of training do you put them through?
"I treat my celebrities like any other client, exactly the same. I'm abusive, I'm rude to them - they hate me but love me. They're actually all good friends of mine and we have a good rapport; you have to have to have a good rapport between client and trainer. I think they respect me."

What's your favourite workout?
"Walking - I love walking as it's incidental exercise, you can do it everywhere, any time any place and it costs nothing!"

How many times a week should you exercise?
"Every day. You should walk everyday for between 30 minutes to an hour. You can do this in short spurts, five minutes here, 20 minutes there. Try and walk wherever you can so it becomes part of everyday life - that way you'll become healthier."

Is it possible to exercise too much?
"Of course - you must exercise in moderation. That's why athletes become injured, because they overdo it."

How do you motivate yourself and others?
"I know what it is like to feel overweight. I used to be five stone heavier so I know what it's like to be fat, I know what it's like to carry excess weight and what it's like not to feel healthy and good about yourself. I now feel very healthy and don't want to step backwards. I don't go to gym, I love the fresh air, in the rain, the snow, whatever - I just love the feeling of getting outside and feeling so much healthier."
