Mastering the Capsule Wardrobe

Episode specialise in fabulous jackets, skirts and blouses all made from good quality fabrics – fine wool, silk, satin – that are designed to last and won’t sag after half a day slaving over a hot computer. DKNY on the other hand have a younger, slightly edgy profile – but also focus on shapes and fabrics that wear well all day. Certain key colours predominate – in particular black, white and khaki are big with them this season. The look is young and hip and yet also very wearable in an office situation. Check out their fabulous shirt dresses – this season’s must-have for every working woman.

As for The Perfect Capsule Wardrobe – nothing could be simpler. You’ll need a couple of dresses – the ‘shirt’ and also a wrap dress – still the simplest way to look elegant and sexy at the same time. L.K. Bennett has good silk imitations of the Diane von Furstenburg original.

A simple neutral skirt and pair of trousers are also vital. Find a fabric that won’t ‘seat’ - fine wool with loads of lycra is best. Jackets this season are worn sloppy and large (think your boyfriend's favourite old linen jacket) with trousers, or nipped in at the waist. The Chanel look remains a perennial favourite and you’ll find versions everywhere from Marks and Spencer to Topshop.

Fashion dictates that shoes are wedged and worn high, but this is not the best idea for a woman who has to schlep round London on the tube, so steer clear of these if you want to avoid a broken ankle and opt instead for one of the scrummy suede ballet pumps that are on offer – pretty and comfortable at the same time. Finally, the chiffon shirt is everywhere – and is a lovely look with smart trousers and elegant heels. If you want to spare your colleagues blushes, mix with a silk camisole. Throw on a simple cashmere cardigan for warmth and you have a great look that is both smart and deliciously feminine.

Good luck with your new job!
