Spa Of Embarrassing Illnesses: Resources
Embarrassing illnesses such as IBS, excessive sweating and bloating are extremely common but that doesn't mean that they're incurable. Why suffer in silence if there's help out there?
The eight patients at the Spa Of Embarrassing Illnesses suffer from an array of problems. Here's how to find out more about some of these complaints. As a first point of call, though, it's always worth visiting your GP for a check-up - they will also have lots more information about the condition and the various treatment options, offer a full diagnosis and more on support groups.
Extreme Perspiration
On average we lose over a litre of sweat a day - more if it's hot or we're exercising. Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, occurs in around 1% of the population who suffer from extreme perspiration in the face, hands, feet, armpits and sometimes the whole body. For more information about the disorder, check out NHS Direct Hyperhidrosis section. Plus there's a lot of useful detail on Excessive Sweating Resource, an American site with more in the different symptons, treatments, testimonials and links.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a dry, scaly skin condition in which skin cells are reproduced too quickly. It's not contagious and symptoms can include red, raised patches of sore skin, itching and pus-filled blisters. The National Psoriasis Foundation website is a good starting point, with plenty on the condition, treatments, plus a support network that includes message boards, support groups and chatrooms. The Psoriasis Association also has a comprehensive website, with a really useful jargon buster, information about the condition (including some tips on dealing with psoriasis in children), support groups and further links. You can also contact the Association directly, via email or by calling 08456 760076.
Bloating
Abdominal swelling is defined as a condition in which the abdomen feels full and tight - this is often, but not always, caused by excessive intestinal gas. Bloating from Irritable Bowel Syndrome can result from trapped intestinal gas that arises from mis-timed, or irregularly timed, bowel contractions. Fennel tea is said to work wonders to ease both bloating as it has anti-gas and anti-spasmodic properties. Other recommendations include avoiding chewing gum as this can cause you to swallow a lot of air and to avoid drinking carbonated drinks. If you think your bloating may be linked to IBS, see the next paragraph.
