Baby Squad

Baby Squad: Episode Guide cont'd

Episode 8 – Casey Bolton
18-year-old mum Casey lives with her mum and seven-year-old sister, and her 18-month-old baby Joshua’s disturbed nights are a drain on everyone. He has never been a good sleeper but he still wakes several times in the night and screams even after Casey has picked him. Baby Squad expert Sue Gill advises:

• Make the bedroom a familiar place to sleep by spending more time there.
• Structure bedtime routine with a set time for bathtime and follow that with calming play only – stories or jig-saws.
• Controlled crying sleep technique. Time baby’s cries before you go in and check. After two minutes go in, lie them down, say “night-night” and leave. Repeat. Once baby starts settling, increase to three minutes then five, ten and finally 15 minutes.

Episode 9 – The Tavares Family
Mum Marie is starting to wean baby Kiara but can’t get her to drink out of a bottle. She wants to keep breast feeding but reduce her reliance on it as her only tactic for comforting her baby. Meanwhile, Kiara is spending too much time sleeping in the day and not enough at night. Baby Squad Expert Dawn Kelly offers three top tips:

• Breast feed at set times of day – last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
• Establish a daily routine, waking up if she’s sleeping when she shouldn’t be.
• Find new ways of comforting – spend more time interacting with the baby in new ways. Hold the baby in new positions away such as up on the shoulder.

Episode 10 – The Hunt Family
Joanne Hunt’s 15-month-old son Alex has turned into a little terror. He headbangs when he doesn’t get his own way and is permanently covered in bruises. He also bites, scratches and pinches, usually when he’s overexcited. He's driving his mum to breaking point. Baby Squad expert Sue Gill has some good advice:

• Use distraction with a new game or activity if a tantrum is brewing.
• Ignore the headbanging as it is only hurting him and if he gets no attention for it, he will stop.
• Use “time out” when the baby is biting or hurting anyone else and play gentler games.
