Food To Get You Rude
For the perfect excuse to indulge in some delicious treats (not to mention a night of steamy passion) check out our favourite aphrodisiac eats.
Avocado
The Aztecs called the avocado tree "ahuacuatl", which translates as "testicle tree"; the ancients thought the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree resembled the male's testicles. This is a delicious fruit with a sensuous texture. Serve in slices with a small amount of balsamic vinegar and freshly ground pepper.
Bananas
The banana flower has a marvellous phallic shape and this is partially responsible for the banana's popularity as an aphrodisiac food. The fruit is rich in potassium and B vitamins - necessities for the production of sex hormones. Try caramelising them in brown sugar and Calvados, with a large dollop of cream. And try not to dribble.
Chocolate
The Aztecs referred to chocolate as "nourishment of the gods". Chocolate contains chemicals thought to effect neurotransmitters in the brain, and theobromine - a substance related to caffeine. Chocolate also contains more antioxidant than red wine. The secret for passion is to combine the two; try a glass of Cabernet with a bit of dark chocolate for a sensuous treat. Mmmm!
Ginger
Ginger root, raw, cooked or crystallised, is a stimulant to the circulatory system. Try soft vanilla ice-cream with stem ginger drizzled over the top. Need I say more?
Mustard
Believed to stimulate the sexual glands and increase desire. Prepare a tenderloin roast for two with a mustard and peppercorn sauce, and some scented candles.
Nutmeg
Nutmeg has been highly prized by Chinese women as an aphrodisiac. In quantity, it can produce a hallucinogenic effect. A light sprinkling of the ground spice over your greens, rice pudding or a warm pumpkin soup can help to spice up your evening.
