Lulu's Health Challenge
When veteran pop queen Lulu went to see her doctor for a routine cholesterol check, she was shocked by the results. "I eat healthily and exercise regularly so I didn't think I could be at risk of heart disease," she says. "But even healthy women like me can be at risk if their cholesterol is high." She's now fronting a high-profile advertising campaign to make women aware of the risks of heart disease.
Lulu was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie, on November 3rd, 1948 in Glasgow. She started singing almost immediately and went on to achieve worldwide fame not only for her voice but her incredibly youthful looks! So how did this healthful youthful lady become the celebrity face of Flora Pro.active's heart health campaign?
Family history
Lulu's father and grandfather both died of heart attacks, but it never occurred to the 56-year-old to check out her risks of getting heart disease.
"My father smoked 40 cigarettes a day, ate fried food and did no exercise - I thought his death was to do with that. But high cholesterol can be genetic too. I'd advise anyone with heart disease in their family to go and check their cholesterol levels."
When Lulu discovered that her heart was at risk, she took on the challenge of attempting to lower her cholesterol levels in three weeks.
"I love dairy, but I'd been eating too much butter and cheese," she says. "And I would eat whole tubs of ice cream - now I just don't have it in the house."
