Jayne Middlemiss' Fashion Pet Hates

In our new and exclusive series, Here's Looking At You, Jayne Middlemiss helps women feel better about themselves. But what does the lady herself dislike when it comes to fashion?

UKTV Style: Do you ever see some of the stuff on the catwalk and think, "Blimey, I'd never wear that"?
Jayne: "Absolutely. Some of the clothes you see on the catwalk are more about art than wearability, but I really like the spectacle of the whole thing. It scares me how skinny the models are though. They look so much skinnier in real life than they do in pictures, it actually makes me feel quite sick."

UKTV Style: What do you think is the most unflattering trend of late?
Jayne: "One of the things I think will go down in fashion history and be talked about is low-cut jeans. I wear them all the time, but they're really bad, because you always get that roll of flab over the top of them, no matter how small you are. People who wear jeans that are too tight and too low don't realise it's just not a good look. And the whole 'having your thong on show' thing - people will wonder what the hell that was all about."

UKTV Style: Have you ever really hated an outfit that a stylist has made you wear?
Jayne: "Oh God, yes. I was at my Mum's recently. She's got all the old editions of The O-Zone taped and she made me watch them. I wore really bad clothes throughout the whole thing. I never dress 'fashionably' any more; I like to dress in what suits me. That's what you learn as you get older. You don't think, 'Ooh, that's what Victoria Beckham's got!' and then go out and try and copy it."

UKTV Style: Is a makeover ever really enough to sort out a real minger, or do you think plastic surgery should be made freely available on the NHS?
Jayne: "I don't know about that. We've had some amazing transformations on the show - it's been really great. Some of it's been quite emotional, to be honest. Mark and Celia, the stylists, do a fantastic job and Jeremy the life coach works on their confidence so by the end, they're walking taller. I wouldn't have plastic surgery, but I don't think you can judge anyone. Everyone has their own limits - and good for them, I say. But I wouldn't recommend an operation for vanity's sake."

UKTV Style: Shopping - love it or loathe it?
Jayne: "I love shopping. I like the little boutiques in Notting Hill, because I don't like massive crowds. I don't like shopping on a Saturday as there are too many people about. I love shopping in New York, but it's a completely different culture over there. They get paid on commission, so that's why they're nice to you. I remember shopping in LA for the first time and I was trying on this dress and all the girls were like (puts on an American accent): 'Oh. My. God. That's so cute on you!' And I literally couldn't get the dress off quickly enough - I thought they were taking the mick. It's just not our way in England and I prefer it here, to be honest. I don't need to be helped. I know what looks nice on me."

UKTV Style: So, dish some dirt... who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity around?
Jayne: I wouldn't really like to say. I quite admire people who dress 'badly' as long as they do it with style. Christina Aguilera springs to mind. She wears some tragic, unbelievable things but she wears it with panache. She goes out there and thinks she looks great and I think 'hat's off to you, love'. Her hair might be a mess, but she's wearing it, walking tall, so good for her."
