How to Succeed at Work
Get it right and you'll go far in the workplace. Get it wrong and you'll soon be collecting your P45. Read our guide to success in the workplace and you'll be a hit with colleagues and managers alike. Here's how to thrive in your 9-5...
Create the right impression
Let's get down to basics. In the workplace you'll need to be professional and look the part. And that means arriving on time with clean hair, clean nails and clean language. And if you must come into the office with a raging hangover, don't show it: just pile on the slap and smile.
Thou shalt not whinge
Is your glass more half-empty than half-full? If so, make a conscious effort to look on the bright side. People are much more likely to warm to you if you're wearing a smile instead of a frown, so instead of moaning, say something upbeat. Get into the habit of it and you'll not only give yourself a lift, but others too.
Manage your manager
To thrive in the workplace it's essential to impress management. One sure-fire way to go about this is to present your manager with solutions rather than problems. It's cheesy but managers love that 'can-do' attitude. You've got intuition: use it.
Play for the team
Yes, it's another tired old cliché but we guarantee it'll be top of your manager's wishlist. Pitch in, be supportive, make suggestions and generally show willing and you'll be rewarded a thousand-fold. And being a team player isn't just for work hours. Show you're a) interested and b) interesting by going for lunch and (a couple of) after-work drinks with your colleagues.
Office politics
The workplace is a potential minefield of career-limiting moves such as:
Gossiping. It's fun but not if you're on the receiving end, so indulge in it at your peril.
Drinking. By all means do it (out of office hours natch) but in moderation please. See Office Party Etiquette for advice on getting it right.
Office romances. Many a lifelong partnership is formed in the workplace so we're not advising against it. What we are saying is keep it discreet and don't sleep with the boss.
