Living Room Advice
Minimalist Living Room
This week, our homes and property expert gives advice on using grey in a living room, to create an urban, minimalist look.
Hello,
I want to create a modern/minimalist lounge, but don't know where to start. I like the grey colours used on some design programmes, but what colour to use with it and how many walls should the grey go on?
Thanks,
Gozzer

Hi Gozzer,
Grey can be quite cold and bleak used on its own, so it would be better to add a little more colour to the mix to warm it up. You can still maintain the minimalist, understated look by mixing up charcoal shades with dove grey, cream and beige tones.
For a very natural, organic theme that very much projects a relaxed, urban living loft look choose a grey for the walls that will work with the amount of light your room gets. If the light floods in and you have a bright space, opt for a moody charcoal grey on two walls and balance by painting two walls brilliant white to bounce around any existing light. If the room is a bit on the shady side, choose instead a soft dove grey. If you prefer more pattern, cover your walls in a soft grey and wallpaper one feature wall with a funky geometric design. Check out two designs from the Tate collection at B&Q - Code (4925) in Cocoa, an unusual silver ladder pattern on a brown background inspired by the windows and architecture of the Tate Modern; and Radius (4925) in Graphite, a printed grey circles design that's perfect for a retro Sixties look, both £20 a roll. Visit the B&Q website or call: (0845) 222 1000.
When it comes to choosing furniture and accessories, invest in a sophisticated, loungy mix of linen, leather, dark wood pieces, sumptuous fur throws, sheepskin rugs and piles of cushions in natural shades. A company called Nono Living has an impressive collection of interior products that fit the bill perfectly. This Serra floor lamp is £1, Montana cushion, £40, Ananda sofa, £1,595, Serra table lamp, £125, Brunello leather cube, £199, throw, £95, Shagadelic cushion on floor, £30, and Irresistible Mongolian fur rug, £9. Best wishes,
Donna
