After years apart, Freeman Hardin Jr finally tracked down his long-lost Dad Freeman Sr living rough on the streets. In one of those quirky twists of fate, he found him on Father's Day. It's a tear-jerking journey as the team build a house big enough for Freeman Sr to be reunited to the fold.
Once a successful professional boxer, the years have taken their toll on Freeman Sr's health and he now lives with a mental illness. Bringing him back to the family home he shares with wife Laura and daughter Ashley was a priority for Freeman Jr, even though conditions would be cramped and Freeman Sr would have to sleep in a trailer in the yard.
Cue Ty and his loudhailer! When Freeman Jr sees the team's bus pull up he's like a kid in a sweetshop. It's high fives, hugs and hollerin' - yeehaw!
The Hardin homestead is a down-at-heel Seventies style ranch surrounded by acres of scrub. The garden is neglected and Freeman Sr's trailer is poky and shabby. On the upside there's plenty of room for the team to extend the property, so when only-child Ashley whines 'I want a horse', we suspect that Ty will raise to the challenge. But foremost on the team's minds is building a new apartment for Freeman Sr.
It's not long before Ally the stroppy planner makes sparks fly when he comes up against Dave Tesh, the unflappable building contractor, and demands his dismissal. The voice of reason, Dave soon calms our fretful designer and it's manly back slaps and smiles all round. Phew.
Meanwhile, the exterior of the house is given a complete facelift with smart new wood cladding and the addition of a delicate redwood carving created by the plaid-shirted Chainsaw Jack. Equine Ashley is also a devotee of all things pink, so Tracey decides on a rose-coloured theme for her bedroom complete with pastel-pink jukebox.
Outside Preston has sought a permit to move a Joshua tree to open up the back yard to reveal an astonishing view. An impressive barn is built to house two new goats and Cherry-Cola, Ashley's new horse. The installation of a hot tub in the decked pergola area completes the outside area. And what becomes of the old trailer? Why, it's now a state-of-the-art home theatre of course!
But the most touching moment is when Freeman Sr surveys his new pad, a high-spec apartment with a huge boxing mural across one wall. A man of few words, the tear in his eye does the talking for him.
