Extreme Makeover: Mendoza Family

Meet Contessa Mendoza. Aged 17 and still in high school, she took the tough decision to become a single mum. In addition to raising her daughter Analicia (10), this extraordinary woman went on to earn a masters degree, become a social worker and foster two boys Angel (18) and Tony (14).

Extreme Makeover: Mendoza Family

'I'm here in 1974' says Michael as he surveys the dated Mendoza home. It's also nowhere near big enough. The boys share a room and as they have six siblings between them who come to visit at weekends, there are beds everywhere. Contessa's room is more junkyard than bedroom and the garage with its collapsing door reveals mountains of clutter. As Preston puts it 'I'm so glad the bus stopped here'.

With the Mendozas en route to Disneyworld, our glamorous team don their hard hats and sledgehammers and set about demolishing the front of the house. The plan is to build upwards by creating two new storeys and adding 400ft², but problems beset them from day one. About to pour the concrete foundations, the rains come down, the tarpaulins go up and the schedule goes back. It's a twitchy time for all.

Meanwhile the team set about designing the childrens' bedrooms. Tony's love of astronomy hasn't gone unnoticed and Preston (briefed with Exteriors and Big Ideas) is soon installing a telescope and a space station console. Angel, on the other hand, finds his roots in urban hip-hop so graffiti wall art and mammoth speakers are on their way. Analicia's bedroom becomes an enchanted underwater palace with aquarium and sea-kelp bed and Contessa gets the elegant boudoir and four-poster she's always dreamed of.

Landscaping gets underway with a 'Camp Mendoza' theme, complete with river, waterfall and tents, and of course, the biggest barbeque you've ever seen.

The love of Angel's life is a battered old sedan which the family can ill afford to run. Ty organises a visit to the workshop of George Barris (creator of the Batmobile) and one hotrod later, the car is unrecognisable. Just wait for Angel's reaction!
